Borknagar releases first Urd song for streaming
Here we are! Finally!
I’ve been waiting for this for quite some time now. After we went back home from Fascination Street I have been dying to show this to everyone and get some feedback on this. And the release date is still some weeks away, but at least we can now share one of the songs from the upcoming Borknagar album with you!
Below you can also see a new band photo and the statement from Century Media. The Statement also contains the link, but for you impatient ones you can find it here at Metal Hammer Germany: Borknagar – Roots – (Urd)
Let me hear what you think!!!

BORKNAGAR – Launch first new promotional song and new band-photo!
Norwegian Avantgarde Metallers BORKNAGAR are premiering a first promotional song off their much anticipated new studio album, “Urd”, today via the website of Metal Hammer (Germany). Go check out the enthralling track “Roots” here: Borknagar – Roots – (Urd)
BORKNAGAR’s mastermind Øystein G. Brun checked in to comment about the song as follows:
“In regards to the depth, diversity and magnitude of our new album, “Urd”, it almost feels painful to slice off just a tiny bit of the bloody roast for the very first official “starter”. I would argue that each and every song on the new album stands on solid ground, but as usual with our music, the songs empower each other in the context of a full album.
That said, “Roots” is probably the song on the album that gives you the most representative impression of “Urd”. Musically it contains most of the elements that framework the musical universe of BORKNAGAR, and lyrically this song is gnawing on the very spine of our lyrical tradition. Hope you enjoy this song, the first tiny glimpse into our new opus. The beast is about to be unleashed…”
“Roots” is taken off the album “Urd”, which to be released on March 26th, 2012 in Europe as well as March 27th, 2012 in North America via Century Media Records.
The album’s artwork was designed by Brazilian artist Marcelo Vasco (www.P2RDESIGN.com), who has not only already worked on the band’s previous “Universal” release but also with artists such as Soulfly, Belphegor, Einherjer or Keep of Kalessin. The mixing duties for the album were taken care of by Jens Bogren at Sweden’s Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, etc.).
The tracklisting for the album will read as follows:

Great review, can’t wait to get that album.
Amazing.
Feels like flying,
Anything between now and that album is timekillers
Wow, that’s amazing!!! I really liked Universal, actually i didn’t listen too much to feel all the energies in that album, at least for me (don’t know if you will agree with me) Universal is an extremely complex album, you have to listen a lot to understand..feel..think.. it’s not for casual plays while you are cleaning your house for example. Being that said, even liking this prog-avant garden stuff, i was missing the Borknagar’s roots, i remember i started listenind Universal but after 2 songs i switched to The olden Domain and man, that album is awesome! from the beginning till the end you don’t notice when the cd ends, anyway, I was hoping to hear something more aggressive, a black metal approach , and when i heard Roots today that was what I heard, It’s the new borknagar with the old spirit, its the perfect combination!! Like Vintersorg, i love the prog era but when i heard Jordpuls i was stuned, you guys are awesome.. that’s the only thing i can find to describe what i was thinking while listening to “Roots” My best wishes are upon you, and i truly hope to see you in Brazil this year, please! we will share a beer and talk after the show, i will even pay your beer
sorry for the long post
Whao Tiago, that’s almost a review man
Thanks, good reading!

Stellar track, definite pre order for me. sounds like it takes elements from Empiricism, Quintessence and Universal, it’s amazing. David sure did a great job on the drums too
The natural way of Borknagar: Better and better after each album!
Oystein said on Facebook that “Roots” is only a taste… After he said this, I can’t imagine what is to come with the entire album, but I know that’s will surprise and inspire me again, as always
I sure hope so!

Absolutely great song.
It reminds me stuff from “Empiricism” period. Cant wait to hear more.
Support from Helsinki…!
Yeah, We’ve had several comments mentioning Emp. That’s good.

Great song! I kept playing it over again for about half an hour. I can’t wait to hear the full album. I’ll definitely pre-order this when it comes available.
Cool, I’ll make a post about preordering.

Wow this is great!!!! Thank you for sharing.. Do you think we will see a Borknagar music video with this album…. Roots would make for a great video
We are discussing a video yes, would be a shame not to have one at least.

The hole Song is awesome. Can´t wait for release. Ihope there will be some special edition or something else;)
Greetings from Hamburg Germany
Wow, I’m brazilian and i didn’t knew you had a brazilian doing your artwork… really nice!
And the song is just awesome, really liked your solo and it really does sound like 2 separate pieces in one song. When i heard Mr Vortex’s voice i was like: YES!!!!!! And i really loved the production, top notch. Love the guitar tones
Thank you.
Lot’s of good stuff out of Brazil man, Marcello is a star.

This is really good. I really tried to like Universal, but the magic just did not happen for me with that album and I keep coming back to Empiricism after all these years.
This song reminds me a lot like an Empiricism/Q mixture, both with the melodies and the ambience, (also the guitar work has a lots of similarities) And I instantly like it better than anything on Universal.
(for the record, I have no problem with U, I gave much more spins to it than most of the new music I buy, but it just did not click with me overall)
This song actually made my hopes higher than I expected, so a first day buyer here!
Nice, good to hear.

Wow. It is like two songs in one almost. I love the way it starts with the Soundgarden style, 90s era drum beat and the way it ends in an entirely different way. Really interesting piece of music! The overall production reminds of Quintessence, but pristine and powerful. Good job!
thanks

Always a pleasure! Priceless! Thanx gus!
GREAT!…I cant wait for the entire release!….
Its a very pretty song and completely meets the expectations and more!.
I wonder how will sound something like that live on the Inferno
AND THANKS!
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKK YEEEEEEEEEEEEAHHHHHH!!!!
You did it again guys!!!
Feels fresh, progressive, melodic and aggresive all at the same time and the combination of voices adds a whole new depth to the music
Can’t wait to hear the full album
This is awesome ….
Actually I listen to the song without thinking anything before, without any expectations and now i dig the song deeply, vocals, guitars, bass, drums everything sounds unique! i like the kick drums very much, 2 vocals, and they are both great, but it does not make me feel that the song is written upon the beauty of two best vocalists in the metal music, the complete music sounds great and unique, like Borkfuckingnagar i mean, it is great man, congratulations! Probably it will be the best album of the year, at least for me.
Whoa, thanks
————Jens
That is one epic vocal trio.
Can’t wait for the full album, sounds great so far.
Killer! I’m loving the Vintersorg and Vortex combination. Do you know if there will be any kind of pre-order offer or anything?
Yes, I’ll make a post about the pre order stuff soon
It’s a special t-shirt with the preorder, you’ll like it
